Unusual use for bucket in Anthorn! |
|
The fence runs at right angles to the path, along the side of a small wood. The farmer has (for some unknown reason) left a white plastic bucket upturned on one of the fence posts about 100 metres from the path. Walking along the path early this morning, I was enjoying the peace and bird song when I was startled to hear an extremely loud banging rattle which sounded like a woodpecker drumming very close and was unusually resonant. There were no obvious birds close to me, so I put up my binoculars and scanned the area. The culprit was soon detected - a male greater spotted woodpecker drumming away, using the bucket as a sounding board! The noise was incredible and the bucket was certainly proving to be a very effective amplifying drum. Now I just have to work out what induced the bird to land on a white plastic bucket and try it out in the first place? Anne H Abbs
