CBC Indoor Meeting Programme Winter 2008/2009 Friday 3rd October (AGM), 7.30pm: Penrith UR Church The AGM followed by an identification themed evening with talks by John Strowger on gulls, Robin Sellars on cormorants and chaffinches (yes there is more to it than meets the eye!) , Mike Carrier on common and not so common waders. Friday Nov 7th 2008 at Cockermouth United Reformed Church 7.30pm. Antartica & South Georgia by Roy Atkins. Roy is an ex-chairman of our club and now leads tours all over the world. Friday 5th December 2008 at the beehive room St Martin’s College Ambleside 7.30pm. Black Grouse by Phil Warren. Black Grouse were once widespread, but have declined in numbers and range. The majority of the population are now found in Scotland, with small populations in the North Pennines in England and in North Wales. In England, the North Pennines Black Grouse Recovery Project was set up in 1996 to stem the decline and increase both numbers and range. Dr Philip Warren, the project officer since 2002, will explain the work of the project and its findings. Wednesday 7th January 2009 joint with CHNS at Tullie House, Carlisle 7.15pm. We are hoping to have dual speakers with Jim Fowler on Willow Tit and a.n. other on Marsh Tit. See the next newsletter for details. Friday 6th February 2009 at Penrith United Reformed Church 7.30pm. To be announced Friday 6th March 2009 at the beehive room St Martin’s College Ambleside 7.30pm. The Goosander by Kevin Briggs. Should be a fascinating talk on a relatively newcomer to our county. Winter Bird Race Sunday 4th January 2009: Finish will be in the Kendal area – further details in the next newsletter. More teams needed. A fun event finishing with the traditional social with pie and chips. For all levels of expertise, come and have a go. Just register your team with Colin Gay (01229 773820) who is also the keeper of the rules. Outings Fieldwork and identification training days To help those lacking confidence in the art of bird surveying a number of council members are offering to take members out on actual atlas surveys. Help with survey methods, bird identification by sight or sound, filling in forms and any other aspect required. It is envisaged that this will begin in November when atlas work commences though please enquire if you would like help earlier than this as most of us take part in other surveys throughout the year.
